Diagnosis of MRSA infections is usually
done while actually treating the condition. Treatment
includes incision and drainage of a suspected MRSA abscess.
A sample of the purulent discharge, a.k.a. pus, is sent to the
lab for a C & S. This is a culture and sensitivity.
The lab grows the sample, and tests its resistance to small
samples of commonly used antibiotics. This C & S test takes
approximately 48 hrs to complete. Because of the virulent nature
of MRSA, treatment with antibiotics begins before the C
& S returns
